Dubai

Each day goes by faster and faster and it is now only 5 days till we have to move to Dubai. I can't even begin to say how much i am going to miss my home. My room. My Best Friend. My bed. UGH. I mean, Dubai can't be all that bad. Right? anybody, somebody? Reassuring words would be great at this time of my life. At least there will be tonnes of things to do, no more boring rainy days and screen eyes from watching too much television like we did in South Korea. And the waterparks sound fantastic, plus there is an ice rink near the place we are staying (dance of joy)..............

What's wrong with school?

My best friend and i have been home schooled for a week now. I have done homeschooling twice before both times on the small island in South Korea. I missed being with people and the privileges and funny times of being at school in the classroom. I also missed having a teacher that could explain things to me. Yet, now I finally realize the advantages of being homeschooled, especially since i am in Grade 8 and I really have to start getting serious about my school.

When my family and I came back to South Africa from South Korea in 2010 i switched from being homeschooled to going to a government school. I was going to grade 7 at the time and was joining up with some of my old school mates from grade 2. My best friend had been going there pretty much her whole life and was in the grade below me so i was very excited to start and get back into the system. After about 4 weeks i found out how horribly wrong about the whole school thing. Teachers should get chosen for their love of teaching and children, not just because they are strict and want the money. People who failed their matric maths or english certainly shouldn't be teaching math to grade 7 pupils. I also found that in a class of 32 school kids, you  have some who want to learn and become professional doctors and who really take learning seriously and some who just faff around and disrupt the lesson while others join in to impress their friends. Also, some kids are not as great in maths as some or in science or english, so those you are behind keep everyone else from learning and showing their true potential. So you have a teacher who is trying to explain how to calculate quadratic equations  to a group of 32 teenagers who have no interest at all in the subject, then someone has to put there hand up and ask a question of how everybody's weekend was. This sentence is one of those that can completely destroy 2 hours time without anybody noticing it. This question popped up a lot in my class and kids are always eager to answer it so long as it gets them away from how to square a number. This wouldn't be so bad if one kids joined in but pretty soon you have the whole class shouting how they walked their dog or fed a horse and before ya know it the hour for maths has disappeared and you are stuck with a bunch of homework that was meant to be done in class. That's another thing I don't get. Homework. You spend 6-7 hours at school only to come home with another 2 hours of work that was actually supposed to be done at school. The teacher gets a pile of worksheets at the beginning of the day that she is meant to give out for homework at the end of each day, but when the lesson is running the ' what did you do on the weekend' question pops up and none of the required work gets done so that work plus the already assigned homework is given to kids to do at home. Then you have the problem of the homework not being the stuff you learnt in class. At school it's 2+2, at home its 2+2+4 and then in exams it's ' a man has 3 cups for water, he uses one himself then gives one away to his friend. How many cups must the man have before he has a lollipop.' The teachers only explain the easy stuff at school and give the hard work for homework so they don't have to explain it, the parents do.

There are many things that are wrong about school and that is why I am so glad to be homeschooled. I can focus on subjects that I am really interested in and can finish all the work that needs to be done quicker than at school, plus I do not get homework!

A day in Seoul

Long time no post! I have definitely realized how important my blog is to me and each day I didn't write in it i felt sadder and sadder. The reason for not writing for so long you ask? I am home! Home in my own room where I don't have 5 people snoring beside me. Home where I can shower in my own bathroom and not have to worry about touching the sides of the shower because they are as clean as anything. I could write  many more sentences about why I am so happy to be back in Cape Town but that is probably not of any interest to you lot (sniff). Anyway, this particular post is all about our day in Seoul, the South Korean capital, which we stayed in for just a day until our plane was going to take off, which happen to be at 12:00am.

We had already decided that we were to go to Insadong, a street that includes many authentic shops that are fun to window shop, yet the shopkeepers were not impressed at us drooling and breathing on their windows. To get to Insadong you could :Take a taxi, walk, hire a car, or to those who like a sense of adventure and have  a good talent for directions, could take a subway. We,of course, took the last option and strutted out of the hotel in a duck line daddy duck, mommy duck, amber duck, ruby duck and river duck. We looked as though we were going to the North Pole what with our gloves and hats and knitted scarves , but it was all worth it because it was freeeeezing once we stepped outside and the wind contributed to the -2 degrees. The subway station wasn't too hard to find (thank goodness) and the parents went to sort out tickets while Thing one and Thing 2 posed for a picture.

I say we go that way.

Longest word in the world?

Pneumonoultramicroscopicsilicovolcanoconiosis

Taa -daa!! Trying saying that all in one breath. What does it mean?? Aghm (clearing throat) according to the dictionary it is a lung  disease which is caused by breathing in very fine silica dust. There was another "word" that also popped up when I was searching the topic but i do have doubts about it. I'd LOVE to hear someone saying it , snicker, but try mutter it under your breath here anyway. I shall include it here for laughing sake .

A visit to the moon

A beautiful, astounding lunar eclipse took place last night and, finally, we were in a country that would get a glimpse of the moon. Mother and i planned to stay up until the moon was completely covered, which happened to be at 11:30. I have no trouble staying up for all hours, that's just what kids do, but dad was already snoring on the couch and my eyes were feeling very droopy . Suddenly mom let out a little sigh of excitement and I rushed to the window sticking my face out into the freezing cold blustery winter night. There is was, the moon at it's fullest 1/4 of it was already taken over by a creeping shadow making it look very mystical. I had a sudden desire to rush in to a space ship and go and visit the moon my own self. I couldn't take my eyes of it, I wished it was bigger so I could see it clearer. My glasses aren't fitted for maximum zoomige. Mother wanted to take a few pictures, so did i with my new birthday camera might i add, to post on this blog. So, the coats were shoved on, fluffy hats, itchy scarves, duvet pants, gloves and any other warm materials we had in our cupboards. When i say it's cold, i mean it's cold. Maybe not Arctic cold but cold enough to make your face go numb as soon as to step out of the warmth of the heated house. At that moment, i was quite glad for Korean floor heating. We looked like a couple of weird, weirdos, and we were already strange enough to the Koreans but now we were probably the funniest things they had seen all day. The view of the moon was a little better outside but it was still to far away to marvell at it's complete beauty. I took out the binoculars dad had bought, how convenient, and tried to find the moon. After a full 7 minutes of trying to find the moon through the oversize zooming apparatus, I was ready to give up... but wait there it was, almost completely covered by the waning shadow of the sun. I did not know that much about eclipses, only the information from the websites I had read earlier to get a better understanding of them. I felt quite sad in knowing that this was to be the last elcipse until 2014, thankfully, I will still be alive ( wiping sweat).
At precisely 11:30 I rushed ,once again, to the window to see the moon covered in a faint red, I sighed and really wished I was an astronaut. But even people wishing to be astronauts have to get some sleep so i wished the moon a good night and settled in the warmth of my sleeping bag.

A poem about a cat

The incredibly fat orange cat,
sat on the lumo pink mat,
he wore a large blue top hat,
and did nothing except catch the occasional rat.
The incredibly fat orange cat,
never has time for idle chit-chat,
and don't even think about giving him a pat,
or you'll soon feel the fat cats wrath.
The incredibly fat orange cat ,
was actually quite lonely in fact,
because having a chat,
about a rat,
while you sit on a scratchy lumo pink mat,
with a fat orange cat,
cab be quite a bore you see
why don't look at me!
You are the one who has to pat,
the incredibly fat orange cat .
